So you’ve decided to try Massage Therapy, good idea! Massage Therapy can relieve stress, soreness, and even stimulate hormone production.
Here are a few things you can do to make sure you get the most out of your massage:
1. Take a hot bath or shower
There are a few reasons to prepare for your massage with a soothing bath or shower. For one, the warm water can relax and loosen up your muscles to make the massage more effective. Another, more obvious reason to wash up before your massage is to smell fresh for both yourself and your Massage Therapist.
2. Drink plenty of water
Proper hydration is essential in general, but it’s especially important before a massage. Well-hydrated muscles are more malleable and easier to massage effectively than dehydrated ones. It’s also important to drink water after your massage to help flush out metabolic wastes.
3. Disclose any relevant health information
Your masseuse must know about any injuries or conditions you may have before they begin your treatment. If you have any skin conditions or injuries that can be spread or exacerbated by touch, you need to disclose it to your masseuse, or you’ll run the risk of making them worse. Most Massage Therapists will find a way to work around them.
4. Wear your lazy clothes
Wearing comfortable clothing is important for all types of massages. If your massage requires you to strip down, you’ll have a much easier time in your sweatsuit than you would in your favorite tuxedo. For fully clothed massages like Shiatsu, wearing looser clothing will make it easier for your Massage Therapist to manipulate pressure points effectively.
5. Don’t be self-conscious
Your massage is supposed to be a relaxing, stress-relieving experience. So don’t worry about your hairy legs, callused feet, or how you just haven’t had time to get to the gym lately. Your Massage Therapist has seen it all before, they’re human too, and they don’t judge!
Now you’re ready for your first massage!
