Are Alternative Therapies Better Than Traditional Medicine? - truMedic

Alternative therapies have gained a lot of momentum over the last decade. Once thought to be ineffective and unsuccessful in treating different issues, they are now seen as real alternatives to traditional medicine. Offering numerous benefits to people suffering from a wide range of ailments, we look at why they have become a popular alternative.

Firstly, let’s look at what exactly alternative therapies are

An alternative therapy is something that is generally used instead of conventional medical treatment. A practice that is put forward as having the healing effects of medicine, alternative medicine does not originate from evidence gathered using a scientific method, is not part of biomedicine, or is challenged by scientific evidence. Examples of alternative therapies include new and traditional medicinal practices such as homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic, energy medicine, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine.

Do they work?

For most, the jury is still out on alternative therapies’ effectiveness. All conventional medication and treatments must go through rigorous testing by law in order to prove that they work. However most alternative therapies have not been through such testing, meaning there is no scientific evidence proving that they either work or don’t work.

Who uses alternative therapies?

Many people from all walks of life and with varying illnesses and ailments use alternative therapies. Sufferers of pain and discomfort often use alternative therapies to help manage symptoms and get on with daily life. Likewise, people with illnesses such as cancer have found comfort in alternative therapies.

Why are they a good alternative?

Unlike traditional medicines, alternative therapies generally don’t pump chemicals into your body, meaning that the chances of harsh side effects are significantly reduced compared to traditional medication. Likewise, alternative medicines are generally not invasive, so the pain and discomfort associated with treatments such as surgery can be eliminated.

As there is no scientific or medical evidence to show that alternative therapies can cure any type of illness or complaint, they are very hard to monitor. However millions of people all over the world  have benefited and found comfort from alternative therapies, with many hailing them as wondrous for their conditions. As with everything, if you are looking at alternative therapies as a way to ease your suffering, it is always advised to seek medical guidance first and visit trusted professionals.
